Resembling overhanging wires, the end sprouts into dragonflies in flight, hovering menacingly like a drone attack, on what looks like the detritus of urbanisation, urban decay. Would any premeditated assault be rendered futile, since the rot has spread Ground Zero? Alphabets and random numbers may convey some semblance of literacy and by extension, progress, but lines of communication have become tangled in a crimson world of deceit and power-play, and Machines have overtaken Man. This Untitled work is from Ivan Lam's 911 Series from his After All These Years exhibition at Wei-Ling Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2007, looking at the ramifications of the shocking Twin Towers attack in New York, on Sept 11, 2001. Ivan Lam was accorded a survey exhibition of his 20 years of creative explorations by Wei-Ling Gallery in 2015. This was after his one-month residency in Dusseldorf, Germany, in February 2012. He had featured in Art Stage Singapore and Art Basel Hong Kong in 2013, and was commissioned by Louis Vuitton to make a painting for their collection. He had won the national-level award of the Asean Art Award in 2003, and was chosen among 10 finalists in the Sovereign Art Prize in Hong Kong. After a Graphic Design certificate at the University LKW Institute of Technology, KL (1994), he got his BFA from the Maine College of Art, United States (1998) and MA from the University of East London (2006).
