From four pictures of taxidermised animals from taxidermist-zoologist Soon Bo (1930-2006), Singapore’s Robert Zhao explores connections between Man and animals in a career based on photography and spanning video, performance and installations. The four images are of a river lion (two pieces), a slow loris and a Raffles tiger. His is like a National Geographic documentation on ecological and even anthromorphological issues that can be gleaned from his fictive Institute of Critical Zoologists (ICZ), which is touted as “an interdisciplinary centre dedicated to promoting critical zoological dialogue and research.” Robert Zhao received his BFA and MFA in Photography from the Camberwell College of Arts and the London College of Communication. He had won the UOB Panting of the Year Award in 2009, apart from the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award (2010), Deutsch Bank Award in Photography (University of the Arts, London, 2011), the Sony World Photography Awards in 2010 and 2011. He is a fulltime artist who has done research-residencies in the Kadist Art Foundation in California and Christmas Island, and shown in the Sydney Biennale, Art Stage Singapore, the Moscow Biennale of Young Art, the Yinchuan Biennial, the Jakarta Biennale, and the Biennial of Photography in Switzerland, among others. He had several solos in Singapore, Australia, the United States, Italy and China including A Guide to the Flora and Fauna of the World, Centre of Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2015), and Primo Marella Gallery, Milan (2014).
