A mamak stall is an open-air concept food outlet, a place for people to unwind and feel the breeze in the air. Mamak stalls are usually owned by the Indian Muslim community. The emigration of the Indian Muslims to Malaysia introduced delicious elements such as spices into the local food scene. A variety of delights can be savored in these stalls, most commonly roti canai, mee mamak, fried rice, noodles, and various beverages. The surrounding environment is humble and inviting. Lui Cheng Thak’s rendition of the mamak stall reflects this warm memory of good times. Lui studied at the Kuala Lumpur College of Art from 1987 to 1989. His early solos were As I Was Passing (Hotel Istana, organised by Pelita Hati), Our Heritage (Rusli Hashim Fine Art, 2001), As I Was Passing II (Galeri Citra, 2006), Circles: Nostalgia and Collective Memory (White Box Publika, 2014). He had 10 solos with PINKGUY Gallery, an amazing feat for artist and gallery. He had a record of sort in his Redeem solo exhibition at PINKGUY in 2014 when all 12 works were sold within 18 minutes of opening!
