In Bargain, Gaik Hoon devotes her attention to the colours and patterns on the traditional apparel worn by the group of women negotiating on the fish prices in the foreground, demonstrated through refined watercolours strokes. A majestic view of the vast kampung scenery unfolds in the distance. Her paintings capture the Malaysian landscape and people executed with intricate details. Tan Gaik Hoon graduated from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art with a Diploma in Fine Art in 1994. She is a member of the Malaysian Watercolour Society. Gaik Hoon’s works can be found in collections in many countries such as Australia, France, Holland, United States, Singapore, Sweden, and Malaysia. Her work had also travelled to Seoul in South Korea where it was exhibited at the 22nd Korea New Art Festival. Apart from that, she was the Consolation Prize winner of the 1993 Competition organised by Kontena Nasional and the Shah Alam Gallery.
