Tan Seng Yong is renowned for his tiger paintings executed in the style of traditional Chinese ink painting. Distinguished by their humanistic quality, his works portray tigers in varied movements and poses that express individuality. His close study of the animal, through frequent visits to the zoo and sketching, informs the liveliness and sensitivity of his depictions. Executed with refined and controlled brushwork (gongbi), this work portrays the tender bonds of family affection between tigers. The painting exemplifies the tenderness and humanistic perception that are seen in his tiger compositions. Known as the Tiger Painter, Tan Seng Yong studied at the National Taiwan Normal University’s Department of Fine Arts. He held his first solo exhibition at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Singapore in 1973.
