Born in West Sumatra, the works of Indonesian painter Hasan Djaafar were influenced by the impressionist movement reflected in the mesmerising views of the Indonesian landscape. Paying homage to the cultural traditions of Indonesia, this work captures a ceremonial occasion under an ancient tree. A sense of movement is portrayed through the fluid brushstrokes, modelled figures and bold colours that evoke a festive mood.
