The vivid paintings of Tan Gaik Hoon capture local traditions and people executed with intricate details. Afternoon Tea suggests a calming moment of the day, featuring a Nyonya lady in red kebaya attire, painted with refined brushstrokes. Tan Gaik Hoon graduated from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art with a Diploma in Fine Art in 1994. She is a member of the Malaysian Watercolour Society. Gaik Hoon's works can be found in collections in many countries such as Australia, France, Holland, United States, Singapore, Sweden, and Malaysia. Her work had also travelled to Seoul in South Korea where it was exhibited at the 22nd Korea New Art Festival. Apart from that, she won the Consolation Prize winner of the 1993 Competition organised by Kontena Nasional & the Shah Alam Gallery.
