You'll probably never guess the artist of the abstract fragmented figures in his 1970 painting, which looks like a cross between Joan Miro and Paul Klee. Hendra Gunawan! As there were scant abstract works by Hendra to measure this by, the work could have been conceived as a lark, on a capricious whim. The shapes are basically organic, with lines or tubular outreaches linking the various sections. Hendra Gunawan is one of the best known of Affandi's generation. Indeed, he was in the Five Artists Group in Bandung with Affandi, Barli Sasmitawinata, Sudarso and Wahdi Sumanta. Artist, sculptor, poet and political activist, he was jailed by president Suharto for 13 years, released only in 1978. He was against injustice, poverty and colonialism, and was imprisoned in Kebon Waro for his involvement with Lekra, the People's Cultural Institute, which had leftist leanings. He was also active in Persagi (Association of Indonesian Painters) and the theatre group Poesaka Soenda in Bandung. His painting, Ali Sadikin Pada Masa Kemerdekaan (Ali Sadikin During The Independence Struggle, 1978) sold for US$4.29m at Sotheby's Hong Kong In October 2014. More recently, in the August 2022 Sotheby's Singapore auction, his Fish Market On The Beach (1980) sold for S$1.6m (US$1.2m).
