Graduated with a Diploma in Malaysian Institute of Art, WE! (b. 2002) is a multidisciplinary artist in both fine art and illustration from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. WE! works primarily with watercolour and colour pencil on raw canvas, inspired by Chinese watercolour works. By referencing scientific drawings of floras and micro-organisms, WE! creates feminist works that critique the patriarchy as well as pay homage to femininity and feminine stories through her surrealist works. WE! has exhibited in many group shows notably ‘Locals Only!’ in Taksu Gallery KL as well as win awards like Jury’s Pick in Art Against Aids.
WE! (pronounced wei) is a fine artist and illustrator that explores modern feminist issues through nature-based metaphors. By referencing human cell structures, flora and fauna, she maps the female psyche while critiquing patriarchy and capitalism from a social feminist perspective. These heavy themes are juxtaposed against the female form, reinterpreted through a surrealist and absurdist lens. WE! brings a refreshing and thought provoking take to the way female bodies should be viewed as artworks of nature instead of the objectifying lens.
The feeling of unexplained sadness is a very human emotion, unexplainable but prevalent. WE! looks upon melancholy like an old friend, it is almost as if its part of her own being. Inspired by a quote from the movie ‘Fleabag’, Melancholy, A Familiar Fiend represents women are born with pain built in.
