The style of Lucien Frits Ohl, a self-taught artist who was born into an Indo- European family in Palembang in 1904 somewhat resembles that of Gerard Pieter Adolfs (Dutch artist who was born in 1897 in Semarang). Before the war, when he was stationed in Palembang, Batavia and Yogyakarta as a young employee of the Batavian Petroleum Company (BPM), he merely tried his hand at art as an amateur. After the war Ohl returned to the Netherlands in 1948, settling in the Hague. In 1949 he traveled back to Java where he lived and worked in Jakarta until 1954. He then went back to The Hague in 1954 and settled there devoting himself fully to art until he passed away in 1976. His ouvre consists mostly on smoothly conceived landscapes, town views or street scenes with flamboyant trees.
