It may be more difficult for a painter to orchestrate the rhythm (‘movement’) of music on canvas than a conductor in actual philharmonic orchestra setting. The variations in play of what is obviously a static scene of fixed seated musicians with different instruments are achieved by Lim Ah Cheng through a dexterous play of line, colours and figure abstractions. It was a visit to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra performance in 2008 that set the versatile artist who is as adept with Chinese ink as with acrylic and oil, on his art of musical interludes.
Lim Ah Cheng graduated with a diploma in Graphic Design at the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1988-1991, with a simultaneous certificate in communications (storybook design and illustrations) from the Tatsun Studio in 1990-1991. He might have owed his calligraphic-like strokes to the tutelage under Chung Chen Chuan from 1995-1999. He won the Initiative Award in the Galeri Shah Alam Open in 1997, and the 3rd Prize in the National Open in 1998. He has participated in art fairs in England, Singapore and Malaysia. His first solo, of equestrian paintings, was at the now-defunct Elle Six gallery in 2002, and his latest, his 10th, was at the PINKGUY Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, called EnCore. He had two solos in Singapore, in 2004 and 2008. |
