Backed to bent knees, the pugilist closest viewer blocks a blow to his face while readying his right to attack the open flank of his opponent who looks off-stride in the lunge. Hand combat is like life where one can never tell what is in store and just not only have to be vigilant, but prepare the counter-attack in order to save life and limb. Such is the timeless lessons of discipline in Amron Omar’s innumerable Pertarungan manouevres since 1980, either in drawings or paintings.
Amron Omar worked briefly for an advertising company in 1983 after graduating from the Mara Institute of Technology. In 1982, he won the Minor Award in the coveted Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) exhibition with a self-portrait. Some 150 selected works from his copious Pertarungan Series over three decades were shown in his major solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery Malaysia in 2012. Amron had done several portrait commissions including for the Sultan of Brunei. |
