Justin Lim appropriates imageries from lifestyle expressions in socio-political context. There Is No Other Paradise, displayed in Art Stage Singapore 2014, is a paradox that can be read in (1) ‘positive-negative’ and (2) ‘negative-negative’ ways. (1) suggests that the paradise is real and acceptable, warts et al; and (2) that the shortcomings are what make a place a paradise. So, is there a ‘lost paradise’? of a more idyllic time?
Justin Lim completed his postgraduate studies in 2006 with a Master of Art (Fine Art) degree from The Open University UK conducted at Lasalle- SIA College of the Arts, Singapore, where he had a BFA (Hons), majoring in Painting. He had a Diploma in Visual & Digital Art at the Limkokwing Institute of Creative Technology in 2003. He had had residencies at Rimbun Dahan in 2008, Vermont Studio, USA in 2011, Red Gate Gallery, Beijing (sponsored by Khazanah Nasional) in 2012, the University of Tasmania, and Taksu Kuala Lumpur (2007). He exhibited at the Asia Young 36 survey exhibition in South Korea, and took part in the Art Stage Singapore (2012, 2014, 2016), Art Expo Malaysia (2015), and the Asian Biennale in Taiwan (2009). His first solo, Momentum, was held at Taksu, Kuala Lumpur in 2006, and last, Modern Absurdity And The Superficial Abyss, at Richard Koh Fine Art in 2015. |
