The theme is Godsend for Eston Tan with the musical pedigree of Vienna or its local name, Wien. Wien is a city of music. Its cobbled pavements throb with the romance and the symphony of Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss and probably with its mantric strains of Wien Wien Nur Du Allein. For some time now, Eston has created a style of paintings that reach musical equivalents like Synesthesia in his works. He adorns his paintings with a confetti of brightly coloured dots and a textured miasma of layered colours with the intention of giving off a sense of mystery. This work was painted for and inspired by the place of his solo exhibition in Vienna, Austria in 2009 and takes up the scene from a busy intersection around the Ringstrasse central district.
Eston graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts at the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur in 1991 and continued his studies at the One Academy in 1993. He won the Minor Award in the Penang Young Talent Competition in 1999 and the Major Award in the same competition the next year. In 2000, he went fulltime into art. His latest solo titled 26˚C was held at NN Gallery early this year. He has had a few solos in Hong Kong, Austria and Taiwan, while participating in major group exhibitions. Growing up and spending his early years in Penang, Eston captures the charm of the Penang city with his portrayals of old Chinese coffee shops and aged looking sundry shops that give a true sense of nostalgia.
