Pulau Indah (which can be translated as beautiful island), located off the west coast of Selangor, is an unusual island combining container port, industrial estate, mangrove swamps and sleepy villages. It is a sanctuary for various migratory birds and mammals. Soraya Yusof Talismail, one of the finest portrait photographers around, is also known for her landscapes. Her interest in black and white landscape photography started in 1999 when Petronas employed a few photographers to capture Malaysian landscapes for their year 2000 calendar. Soraya seeks to encapsulate and preserve images of the people and landscapes of Malaysia, documenting the country for future generations to appreciate. Her wetlands photographs combine the three vital elements of Wind, Earth and Water, with downcast shadows as light fades and the sky overcast. Here, Soraya has captured the dramatic ambience of Paya Indah which exudes a beguiling stillness and quietude away from the bustling cities.

Soraya was one of the original members of the Matahati artist’s co-operative, graduating from Mara Institute of Technology in 1989. That same year, she was made the personal photographer of Tuanku Bainun, the consort of of Sultan Azlan Shah. Her portraits include those of England’s Queen Elizabeth II and the late Palestine leader Yasser Arafat. Over the years, Her portrait oeuvre reached its height in the exhibition, Imaging Selfs at Galeri Petronas in 2008, and a sampling of the works was shown at Etay Gallery in New York in 2009. She and her artist-photographer husband, Ariff Awaluddin, set up the Kokopelli Travellers Bistro and Gallery in Petaling Jaya and have worked together on the project called Angin on the folk arts of Kelantan. Soraya has been a member of the Professional Photographers of America since 1992.
