HENRY BUTCHER ART AUCTIONEERS PRESENTS DIVERSE SELECTION OF MALAYSIAN AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART IN NOVEMBER 2016



Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers sale of Malaysian and Southeast Asian Art will be held on Sunday 6 November at Galeri Prima NSTP. Offering 131 works sourced from private collections, the sale will feature inspiring works by prominent masters and renowned contemporary artists, offering seasoned and new collectors a meticulous selection of Southeast Asian artworks. An exclusive auction preview will be held from 26 October to 5 November 2016 at Galeri Prima NSTP.

The sale will present a selection of distinguished works by highly acclaimed artists including National Art Laureate Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal’s 1965 masterpiece Perchobaan, a remarkable Dr. Jolly Koh painting dated late 1960s sourced from a private collection in Europe, Agus Suwage’s My Heart – Tribute to Frida Kahlo is a unique self portrait which conveys the experiences in Frida Kahlo’s life, Eng Tay’s End of The Day dated 2001, which portrays the artist’s signature theme of family and friends, A charming figurative piece by Dato’ Mohd Hoessein Enas dated 1978 and Khoo Sui Hoe’s elegant tableaux of two female figures titled Two Standing dated 1996. Another highlight is a sophisticated batik work titled Lady Model dated 1966 by Chuah Thean Teng Dato’. Sourced from a private collector in Denmark, the painting illustrates the theme of the artist and model, showing the artist's outstanding ability and creativity in depicting the basic female contours and the volume of the flesh tones by using a technique of wax- resist dyeing applied to cloth. A rare and beautiful market scene by Kow Leong Kiang dated 1996 is also on offer. The rich colours, delicate strokes, and ripe forms carries all the hallmarks of the artist's greatest early works.

Important pieces by established artists include Datuk Ibrahim Hussein’s rare last drawing from the Spaces and Forms 1975 series, Khalil Ibrahim’s intricate ink drawing and watercolour paintings from the East Coast Series, highly sought after abstract artist Awang Damit Ahmad’s early Marista series dated 1996 and Payarama series dated 2014, Dato’ Tajuddin Ismail’s Red Oasis No.2 dated 2002, Redfield October dated 1994, and Green Solitude dated 2002, Rafiee Ghani’s iconic early work Dusun Raja from the Roomscape Series dated 2000, Zulkifli Yusoff’s Siri Pasir Salak dated 2008, inspired by past historical events, Ahmad Fuad Osman’s Study for Fly Me to The Moon, 2007, Yusof Ghani’s Nakhoda Alam Wayang Series dated 1998 and Ombak Sutera 13, 2013. A selection of fine pieces of Nanyang style paintings by Chia Yu Chian, Tew Nai Tong, Ho Khay Beng, Khaw Sia, Siew Hock Meng and Fung Yow Chork will also be included in this auction. The sale also features a rare acrylic painting by Khaw Sia titled Bali Padi Field, 1982. The scene depicts a heavenly landscape in Bali, showcasing the artist’s intimate connection with the land. Wan Wing Sum’s 1979 masterpiece titled Four Seasons and a 1986 painting depicting nine propitious koi fishes will also go under the hammer.

The contemporary segment will showcase a selection of works which offer critical insight concerning social and environmental histories of the region. Among the highlights featured in this section include Yee I Lann’s Orang Besar Series: YB1-10, set of 10 works dated 2010, Heri Dono’s The King with Three Guns dated 2013, Yusof Majid, Wong Hoy Cheong, Juhari Said, Phuan Thai Meng, Samsudin Wahab, Genevieve Chua, Victor Balanon, Norman Dreo, Leo Abaya, Angki Purbandono, Attasit Aniwatchon, Olan Ventura and Mella Jaarsma.

Exceptional contemporary figurative paintings by Fadilah Karim, Cheong Tuck Wai, Aely Manaf, Erik Pauhrizhi, Gan Chin Lee, Marvin Chan, Fawwaz Sukri, Jahan Loh and Latif Maulan are also on offer this season. A strong selection of fresh names are introduced which includes Dr. Askandar Unglehrt, Alex Leong, Chow Chin Chuan, Khairudin Zainudin, Suhaidi Razi, Yap Hong Ngee, Chew Fang Chin and P. Gnana.
